19th CENTURY

In the 19th century, with the Independence war, the city was ocuppied and sacked by french people, and built a garrison in the castle.

Next to our city, the Bailén Battle happened. In this battle, napoleonic troops were defeated. In Jaén we have a monument that commemorates that battle. It is located in Las Batallas Square.

During the reign of Ferdinand VII, in the Trienio Liberal, Jaén became in scene of the battle between the absolutists and liberals troops, the liberals troops were run by Rafael Riego. With all of that the city wasn't named capital of the province until 1833, which was a break in its decline process.

During the reign of Isabel II, Jaén kept loyal to the queen in front to the carlists parties. During the First Republic the city proclaimed itself as an independent canton in 1973.

José del Prado Palacios was an important mayor in Jaén, which was also a minister of Alfonso XIII and was buried in the city.
